The Faculty of Science at the University of Yaounde was established in July 1962 as part of the Federal University of Cameroon (Decree No. 62/DF/289 of 26 July 1962). The earliest lessons were taught in the buildings of what is now the second campus, or Annex. The main campus was inaugurated in October 1967. It became the Faculty of Science of the University of Yaounde I following the 1993 university reform, pursuant to Presidential Decrees No. 93/027 and No. 93/036 of 19 January 1993, to lay down, respectively, common provisions for State universities and the administrative and academic organization of the University of Yaounde I.

Administrative set-up

The administrative set-up of the Faculty of Science comprises, in addition to the Dean, Owono Owono Luc Calvin, ,Professor  who is responsible for management and coordination of all services, a Faculty Assembly, a Faculty Council and administrative services.
 
The Dean is assisted by three vice-deans:
  • Vice-Dean for Academic Planning and Monitoring, Professor Ndjigui Paul-Désiré;
  • Vice-Dean in charge of student Affairs, Statistics and Student Monitoring, Prof. Nyegue Maximilienne Ascension;
  • Vice-Dean in charge of Research and Cooperation, Associate Professor Noundjeu Pierre.
The Administrative Services include:
  • an Administrative and Finance Division, headed by Marie C. F. Ndoye, Associate Professor;
  • Une Division des affaires académiques, de la scolarité et de la recherche, Chef de la Division AJEAGAH Gideon AGHAINDUM,  Professeur
Admission into in the first year of study at the Faculty of Science is open to Cameroonian and foreign nationals who apply, regardless of age, gender or religion.
 
Courses at the Faculty of Science are taught in three formats:
  • Common core lectures;
  • Tutorials;
  • Practicals.
The Faculty of Science is an institution of the University of Yaounde I (UYI) comprising the following 10 (ten) departments:
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Computer Science
  • Earth and Space Sciences (Geosciences)
  • Organic Chemistry
  • Inorganic Chemistry
  • Microbiology
  • Biochemistry
  • Animal Biology and Physiology
  • Plant Biology and Physiology
Doctoral Training Centres and Units
  • Research and doctoral training units (RDTU), particularly in chemistry and its applications
  • Specialized laboratories of the various departments, such as the robotics laboratory and the computer science laboratory.
