The Bachelor’s-Master’s-PhD system sets out the general framework for
higher education studies. It seeks to promote student mobility worldwide and
enables the recognition and transfer of credits between universities. It
standardizes assessment systems and the presentation of academic records.
The academic year is divided into two semesters and runs from October to
July. Each semester (excluding research semesters), students undertake a 30-
credit programme, equivalent to 300 hours of in-person lectures. In-person
lectures are supplemented by independent student research in each module,
the volume and the method of assessment of which vary depending on the
degree programme and the specific modules.
The programme consists of teaching modules (TMs) which may be core
modules for the chosen course, cross-disciplinary modules or introductory
modules. In a degree programme, a number of teaching modules are
mandatory for all students. They then round off their studies with optional or
elective modules. Some degree programmes offer the possibility to have
personal projects assessed as part of the degree requirements.
