Overview

The UYI Central Library (BC-UYI) is located in the heart of the main campus in Yaounde Ngoa-Ekele, close to the Rector’s Office. It is built on a site covering 4 760 m² with a capacity of 1 200 seats, and offers a pleasant and comfortable setting for reading.

The BC-UYI has been renovated and digitized. Indeed, it is seven specialized libraries combined into one, offering a single catalogue of collections and services accessible to all UYI users:

  • Students;
  • Lecturers and Researchers;
  • Technical and administrative staff.

It has over 100 000 digital resources available via a fully functional intranet and comprehensive Wi-Fi coverage throughout the library, enabling users to access the collections remotely.

UYI Institutional Repository

An institutional repository is designed to collect an institution’s scientific output in full text and make it freely accessible via the internet in order to increase its visibility and impact. It offers a range of services for recording, preserving and disseminating digital documents. Researchers can upload their own work to the repository (self-archiving).

Benefits for researchers: An institutional repository makes possible the following:

  • greater promotion and dissemination of research globally;
  • faster access to scientific output;
  • a guarantee that uploaded material will be safeguarded and remain accessible;
  • a boost to the institution’s prestige and the international standing of its researchers.

A more inspiring space for collections that inspire excellence in 2015; major refurbishment work was carried out in 2013, with the extensive renovation of the BC-UYI’s 6 000 m² premises, a renewed partnership with the faculties and a significant enhancement of the collections. The library is a core mission of the university and must serve the objectives of teaching and research support.

The collections must be accessible on-site and remotely. The space must be suitable and the staff competent, while users must be able to find the information they need. The following recent months’ activities therefore reflect these priorities: refurbishment of the physical space, relocation of collections, digital cataloguing, bibliographic verification, information literacy training, the website, the portal, planning for the ongoing development of the collections, exhibitions of rare books, promotion of grey literature, etc. The primary aim of this work was to improve the quality of the premises to ensure better use of the space.

It is now done! The year 2015 will be devoted to collection development: digital and analogue multimedia collections, books, periodicals and conferences, all better tailored to meet the specific needs of the academic community. The BC- UYI’s new library policy is underpinned by a range of initiatives designed to make the most of its extensive collections: institutional partnerships, library networks, collaboration with academic chairs, promotion of academic staff publications, valorization of evidence-based research, training in library and information science, and more. The BC-UYI is always striving for innovation and is committed to providing quality access to knowledge for its diverse audiences, both locally and internationally. In 2015, the BC-UYI will reassert the leadership position of the University of Yaounde I.
