Tribute
On Monday, 2 March, Amphitheatre 700 of the Faculty of Medicine and
Biomedical Sciences (FMSB) of the University of Yaounde I (UYI) hosted a
ceremony to pay tribute to the former Director of the University Centre for
Health Sciences (CUSS) and pioneer Dean of the FMBS. The event was
attended by Professor Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa, Minister of Basic
Education and Head of the Physiology Department at the FMBS.
As a symbol of the transition during which CUSS gave way to the FMBS,
Professor Pierre Carteret was visibly moved by the tribute paid to him by the
university community. It was an opportunity to express gratitude to the Rector
of the UYI for the wonderful occasion. Above all, it was an opportunity to
celebrate his peers, including Professors Gottlieb Lobe Monekosso, Guillaume
Achu and Victor Anomah Ngu
For Professor Esther Meka, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical
Sciences, it was a great honour to welcome such a leading figure of the world
of medicine and research. Professor Remy Magloire Etoua, Rector of the UYI,
echoed these sentiments, praising the career of Professor Carteret, who was
appointed Director of CUSS in 1985 before becoming the pioneer Dean of the
FMBS in 1993, following the university reforms
For Professor Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa, Professor Pierre Carteret is,
beyond their personal bond, a mentor who guided his professional and
academic career. This triggered in him the desire to engage in interdisciplinary
research
To round off this tribute ceremony, Professor Carteret was handed a sculpture
crafted by a Cameroonian artist. A commemorative plaque was also unveiled
in his honour in Amphitheatre 100 at the UYI’s Faculty of Medicine and
Biomedical Sciences
